CRWEE PROJECT: KOBOKO DISTRICT

This project documents the successful installation of eight 6m flexible balloon-type biodigesters across rural homesteads in Koboko District, situated within the remote and agro-pastoral West Nile region of Uganda, completed in December 2021.The initiative was spearheaded by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) under the framework of the Climate-Resilient Women's Economic Empowerment(CRWEE) program, with core financial backing and strategic steering support provided by the Embassy of Sweden. To ensure deep grassroots integration, cultural alignment, and long-term viability, field activities, site selections, and community mobilizations were coordinated locally in close partnership with the Koboko District Farmers Association (KODFA).Targeting vulnerable smallholder agro-pastoral households across Lobule and Ludara sub-counties, the intervention addresses intersecting regional challenges—specifically acute deforestation, heavy domestic labor burdens on women, and the urgent need to transition toward sustainable renewable clean energy and climate-smart agricultural practices.
Justification for Intervention

Project Objectives
-
Women & Youth Economic Empowerment: Combat feminized poverty by reducing the heavy, time-consuming domestic burdens associated with traditional firewood collection—freeing up valuable hours for women and youth to engage in income-generating activities and local cooperative leadership.
-
Clean Energy Transition: Replace unsustainable firewood and charcoal dependence with reliable household biogas systems, improving indoor air quality, protecting local forest cover, and establishing sustainable clean-cooking practices across agro-pastoral households.
- Capacity Building & Local Entrepreneurship: Train local youth and field facilitators to serve as Service Provider Entrepreneurs (SPEs) equipped with the technical skills to maintain, repair, and scale flexible balloon-type biodigesters, ensuring long-term community ownership and technical self-reliance.
