Capacity building for field staff: agroecological performance evaluation

A consultancy for DanChurchAid to train its partner TPO’s project staff in Amudat, Karamoja, to use FAO’s Tool for Agroecological Performance Evaluation (TAPE).

Why it matters

TPO’s 2021 monitoring found that prolonged droughts in Amudat had hit production hard, leaving extreme hunger and food insecurity. Conventional, input-based farming is both a source of emissions and highly exposed to climate shocks. TAPE helps staff measure where farms stand and plan a move to agroecology.

Objectives

  • Determine the agroecological performance of farms and households
  • Support agroecological transition by diagnosing performance, strengths, weaknesses and the enabling environment
  • Identify successful agroecological experiences to scale up and to advocate for policy and financial support
  • Provide methods and indicators that measure the sustainability of farming beyond yield, based on FAO’s 10 elements of agroecology
